SPOTLIGHT ON: Sol Del Sur

In this series, we meet the designers behind the POOL brands for a special look into what it takes to be an independent designer.

1. Tell us about yourself! What is your brand's product? Sol del Sur is a one woman show run by a Chilean ex-Engineer turned Designer. My jewelry takes inspiration from by both my previous training in Acoustics and the visual aesthetics of the Andean Cultures, which had a huge impact on me growing up. These seemingly contradictory influences mix together with my love for metals, textiles and leather work to create unprejudiced, timeless designs. I also make very limited editions of scarves with wools I bring from South America, and fabrics from Peru.

2. What sets your product apart from the crowd? My jewelry with its mix of soft and hard materials and simple designs (with complex execution!) has an irresistible tactile + visual nature. Structured and soft at the same time, Sol del Sur is for those who like to look closer and value difference and originality over trends. I braid my own braids and make everything by hand here in Los Angeles, CA.

3. As independent designers, how did you get into the business? When I was 16, I was traveling through my country Chile during the Summer, while supporting myself selling beaded necklaces that I designed and made at craft fairs. During that time I also learned leatherwork and wire wrapping. After a hiatus of 12 years, I could not wait to create and make again, and the business side just seem the natural thing to do. Why not making a living from what I love to do?

4. Any words of wisdom for aspiring designers? Find your own voice! Always believe in what you do, never loose your faith. Learn from your mistakes and always look forward.
